Closing critical gaps in cancer care with Alberta’s data.

Through the Precision Analytics program, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with Cancer Care Alberta and industry partners, is working to transform how cancer care is planned, delivered and experienced by Albertans.

Precision Analytics is changing the cancer experience and positioning Alberta to lead the way.

Cancer affects one in two Albertans, and one in five will die from the disease. With rates projected to rise by 29 per cent by 2030 and 56 per cent by 2040, the pressure on our system will only continue to grow.

The Precision Analytics program brings together real-time clinical and cancer-specific data from more than 300 million data points. Each one reflects part of an Albertan’s experience of care. Together, they reveal how patients move through the cancer system — and where care can be improved.

Combined with expertise in AI, machine learning and epidemiology, this work supports a learning health system that can predict the impact of decisions, test new models of care and lay the foundation for a smarter, more responsive cancer care system.

Reduce delays across the cancer journey.

Analyzing data like appointment lengths, frequency of visits, ER use and lab results reveals where care is slowing down, so delays between diagnosis, treatment and follow-up can be reduced.

Respond to patient needs with the right care, at the right time.

Combining clinical data with patient-reported experiences, including factors like anxiety, AI identifies groups of patients with shared needs, so care is better timed, tailored and coordinated at every stage.

Anticipate demand and strengthen the system for what’s ahead.

Monitoring patterns across the system and forecasting future demand identifies emerging issues earlier, informs staffing and capacity planning and reduces strain on the healthcare system as more Albertans face cancer.
“It’s paramount we address growing pressures facing the cancer care system today, so we are prepared to help those who need it tomorrow. Not only does the Precision Analytics program exemplify the power of collaboration, but it will create innovative strategies to reduce wait times and enhance capacity within our health-care system.”
